What is it?

This is an individually-tailored treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin, resulting in a more contoured and neck and profiled jawline. The treatment involves a series of non-surgical injections of a prescription medicine which the name of we cannot publicly advertise. The treatment is effective and gradual, with the majority of patients reporting an improvement and reduction in under chin fat after 2 - 4 treatments. This treatment is suitable for people who are troubled by their double chin but who are reluctant to undergo surgery.

How is it given?

Treatments are undertaken in clinic by a trained medical aesthetic nurse. Small amounts of the medicine are injected across several locations in the under chin area. Generally, approximately 20 injections are given per treatment session. Any additional treatment sessions required are spaced a minimum of 4 weeks apart.

Is it long lasting?

Yes, according to the long term study data, results are visible for up to 4 years. Fat cells are destroyed. Once destroyed, these fat cells are unable to store or accumulate fat.

When to expect results?

The majority of patients report an improvement after 2 - 4 treatments, with each treatment spaced a minimum of 4 weeks apart. This is not a one-off treatment. The treatment is to be repeated every 4 weeks for up to 6 treatments or until the desired result has been achieved.

Who can have the treatment?

There is a common misconception that only overweight people can have excess fat under the chin, where in reality, excess under chin fat can be  found in all body types and may be caused by genetics, age or weight gain. Submental fat can have a psychological impact on people and can affect the way they feel about themselves. Anyone who is bothered by their double chin may be eligible for treatment.

This medicine is available to adults as a prescription medicine. The prescription is obtained during a video-health consult at your first treatment session and is valid for 12 months. This medicine is not suitable for use in children or adolescents, younger than 18 years old.

How many treatments are required?

Patients typically require 2 - 4 treatments, with a minimum of 4 weeks between treatments. The number of treatment sessions required is dependent upon the amount of excess chin fat present and the number of sessions needed to achieve a satisfactory response in the individual. No more than 6 treatments can be administered. This is not a one-off treatment. Follow-up appointments to monitor your results and progress are mandatory.  

How does it work?

The solution for injection occurs naturally in the body and aids the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. The injection breaks down fat cells when injected into the neck fat below the chin and the body then absorbs the fat.

The acid disrupts the membranes of adipocytes (fat cells) leading to irreversible cell breakdown (adipocytolysis). The cell breakdown elicits a mild, local physiological inflammatory tissue response, which is largely resolved within about 28 days. Fibroblast cells appear and begin to produce new collagen, and there is thickening of fibrous septa within the subcutaneous tissue.

What are the side effects?

It is common to experience some mild discomfort during and after the procedure. Injection site pain/swelling is common and is typically mild and short-lived. Ice/cold packs may be applied to the area to relieve pain and/or swelling/bruising. Paracetamol and ibuprofen are other ways that side effects may be reduced.
